History
The Scheepshuys has a rich history, which starts in 1927 – during the interbellum period. The house was built for a young couple at the time. They were descendants of the founders of the Hero factories.
After the construction, with the money that remained, the young couple decided to have a weather vane made by the Van der Plas family from Zevenbergschen Hoek (see picture). It became a big and beautifully detailed Dutch East Indies Company merchantman forged out of copper This symbolized the proverbial wedding boat, in full sail for future happiness. Others have claimed that the weather vane was actually made in memory of the husband’s love for a lady from a shipping family. A love forbidden by his family.
The sailing ship was originally covered in gold leaf, but soon after the start of World War Two it was painted white as a precaution. In 2004 the ship’s full glory was restored and the weather vane shines like old times on the villa's roof.
